Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)
This book was pretty funny.  Not as funny as The Office but still funny.  I did enjoy it and it was a quick read for those of you who are selective on what you read you might not want to read it.  There is some language and she talks about anything.  She is a girl after my own heart.  This was also a quick read.  Available for ebooks so you can't go wrong.

The Magicians - Lev Grossman

The Magicians
I didn't really feel the love for this book.  I had heard that it was soooo good not sure if I expected to much and that was the problem or if I would have been equally dissapointed even if I had heard nothin.  Quentin has always loved the Fillory novels (very similar to the Lion the witch and the wardrobe series) right before graduation he finds out that magic is real and gets recruited to a magic school.  This was a little like another magical school I had read about.  However then things grew up real fast I thought.  This definately wasn't a kids book.  These kids were at school with a bunch of adult teachers but had free reign and could do whatever they wanted.  They smoked, drank, did drugs, slept around and were very dissappointing people.  After graduation realizing that they have done the most exciting things that they will ever do and that real life is boring they decide to spend the rest of their life going from one high to the next.  I am willing to give anything a try but have to admit that if I hadn't had this on my nook I wouldn't have finished it.  The story had potential but was kind of boring.  While I wouldn't say that the letter F was a sponser of this book they did kick the word around a lot and then with all of the other content this book definately isn't for everyone.  I did really want to like it but am afraid that I didn't really care for it.

A Great Deliverance - by Elizabeth George

A Great Deliverance (Inspector Lynley Series #1)
Two police detectives from Scottland Yard get sent to a small English town to solve a horrible murder.  While there they end up discovering just how sick some people can be.  This family is so far past disfunctional that they can't even see it in the rear view mirror.  Yes I did just say that.  I loved this book though so much I got the movie from the library yes it was made into a pbs movie and I will be watching it this weekend.

The Invisible Wall by Harry Bernstein

The Invisible Wall: A Love Story That Broke Barriers

Ok I cannot tell you how much I loved, loved, loved this book.  I couldn't put it down.  It was so good.  This is the story of Harry (the author of the book) from about 4 to maybe 12.  He and his family lived on a street in England where one side of the street was Jewish families and the other side was Christian.  The story follows their daily lives and some of the things that happen I laughed, I cried and everything in between.  If there is such thing does that make sense?  I recommend this book, if you read no other book this year this is the one I think that you should read.  He has written two others that come after this and I have them from the library and will be reading them next.

Flutter by Amanda Hocking

Flutter (My Blood Approves Series #3)

Alice life is still exciting and so are the people in it.  This is the third book in the my blood approves series.  Don't want to say to much cause of spoilers but it was good.  I have started the fourth and I think it might be the best of them all.

A Walk Across the Sun - Corban Addison

A Walk Across the Sun
Not that my overviews do justice to any of the books I talk about here I knew there was no way that I could on this book.  I am including the overview from the Barnes and Noble sight about the book.

When a tsunami rages through their coastal town in India, 17-year-old Ahalya Ghai and her 15-year-old sister Sita are left orphaned and homeless. As they struggle to reach the safe haven of the convent where they attend school, they are abducted by human traffickers and thrust into a hidden world of sexual violence and illicit commerce, where the most valuable prize is the innocence of a child.

Halfway across the world, in Washington, D.C., attorney Thomas Clarke faces his own personal and professional crises. Haunted by the tragic death of his infant daughter and estranged from his wife, he makes the fateful decision to pursue a pro bono sabbatical in India with an NGO that prosecutes the subcontinent's human traffickers. In Mumbai, his conscience awakens as he sees firsthand the horrors of the sex trade and the corrupt judicial system that fosters it. When he learns the fate of Ahalya and Sita, Clarke makes it his personal mission to rescue them, setting the stage for a deadly showdown with an international network of ruthless criminals.

Before I was even 100 pages into this book I was thinking that there was no way that I could finish it.  I had already been crying countless times and knew that it would only get worse as the story progressed.  I tried to walk away from this story a number of times.  I am so glad that I didn't put this book down, but it also was very disturbing.  It was a great book.  I know, I know none of that makes sense to me either.  I loved the sisters in this book and their story of their family and I wanted to reach in and protect them from all of the disturbingly, evil, abusive men (and some women) that they came in contact with.  I would read until I couldn't read anymore then walk away until I had to find out if they escaped and then the whole process started all over again.

This isn't a book for everyone not because it is graphic but because of the subject.  The author listed some websites at the end of the book that I am going to list here.  I have looked at a few but haven't had the chance to look at all of them yet.

I think that if you read this book it will have a major impact.

Fate - Amanda Hocking (#2 My Blood Approves)

Fate (My Blood Approves Series #2)

Alice seems to have finally balanced her two worlds, things are going well at home with her brother and even better in her relationship with her boyfriend Jack and his supernatural lifestyle.  Oh and with Peter he is still out there, they are still bonded and meant to be together but in the mean time she is dating his brother Jack who she loves and wants to be with as long as Peter isn't in the room.  When a tragedy strikes her world she must make an unthinkable decision for someone she loves very much.

Another good book.  On to number three.

My Blood Approves - Amanda Hocking

My Blood Approves (My Blood Approves Series #1)
Ok so I really like Amanda Hocking's books my favorite series is still her Zombies series but this one didn't disapoint me.

Alice meets Jack in a chance run in, in a parking lot after partying with her friend one night.  Even though she is 17 and he is 24ish the become inseperable his family approves of her and she enjoys spending time with them.  Then she meets his gorgeous, irresistable brother Peter.  They seem to be meant for each other they are drawn to each other in some strange chemical way.  She can't decide between the two brothers but as far as Jack is concerned she is his,  the family thinks she is meant for Peter and Peter wants nothing to do with her and acts like he doesn't care for her at all.  It is a puzzle alright.

I enjoyed this book so much I immediately bought the other three in the series.

Nightwoods - Charles Frazier

Nightwoods
I loved the movie cold mountain and have meant to read the book.  So when I saw this book by the same author I grabbed it for a quick read.  It isn't a real big book but I felt it was bigger then it needed to be.  I did finish it though which I don't always do.

The story of Luce who inherits her murdered sisters twins and has her life turned upside down in the process.  Luce is a hermit just outside of a small town in North Carolina in the early 1960's.  Her sisters children have put a new meaning to the word troubled and that is just the beginning.

I found I enjoyed this book as a whole once I had finished reading it but it did kind of drag for me in a lot of places in the middle but I finished it cause I wanted to know how it ended.  I can honestly say that as much as I liked the movie Cold Mountain I don't see myself taking the time to read the book.

The Postmistress - Sarah Blake

The Postmistress
The reason that I picked this book up to read was that it reminded me of the Guernsey book.  Not sure why but it just had that feel when I read the cover.  It didn't turn out to be what I had expected but that isn't a bad thing either.  I really did like the book.

In 1940 Iris is the postmistress in a small town in Massachusetts where she thinks that it is her responsibility to pass along secrets through mail.  She takes her position very seriously and never does anything that could cause anyone to question her until one day.... she opens a letter, reads it and doesn't deliver it.

Delirium - Lauren Oliver

Delirium: The Special Edition
This is the story of a future where love is thought to be a disease.  Wanting to avoid catching the Deliria like her mother did Lena is eagerly awaiting her surgery.  Of course 95 days can be a long time to wait and in the mean time don't fall in love.

This is a young adult book that I got on my nook it is part of a trilogy I believe but this is the only one that I have read so far.  This is a clean young adult book.  I will definately be finishing the series.

The Isle Of Blood - Rick Yancey

The Isle of Blood (Monstrumologist Series #3)
This is the third book in the Monstrumologist series.  And it was good as the others.  Dr. Warthrop goes hunting for what will be the greatest discovery in monstrumology Will Henry goes along on this nightmare journey.

So far I think this is my favorite although it is hard to tell since I have really liked all of them.  I even convinced my dad to start reading them.  These are written for young adults and I would allow my young adult to read them.

The Priests Graveyard - Ted Dekker

The Priest's Graveyard

Ok so here it is February and I have not read a whole lot so far this year.  And I haven't been blogging either.  Going to try and catch up over the next few days.  We have been getting ready for the state spelling bee at our house but I am going to spend a little time doing something else, but they will be short, quick and to the point (the posts).

This was a very interesting book, the story of a priest who takes judgement into his own hands. I admit that I was rooting for the priest and was glad that there was someone looking out for the victims in this story.  Although this book didn't grip me right from the beggining like some do I am so glad that I read it I really enjoyed it.

I would suggest this book but it does have some language and subject matter that some might not care for.

Happy reading.

The Gardener S. A. Bodeen

The Gardener
I saw something about this book online maybe on the library sight.  This is a young adult book and it was a conspiracy type book.  All about a little town that is owned by the big corporation that has set up a garden in their back yard.  Just like the cover says they are growing humans.  This was a thinker, after all scientists could very easily attempt to do just this if they haven't already (insert scary music here).  I did really enjoy this book.

End of year

So I haven't posted in awhile and think to catch up I will just add a picture the name and author.  Oh and whether I liked it or not I was told that is important:)

Ivy League Crypt by Christine Frost this is an ebook it was short but I really liked it.  I do love vampire stories.

Ivy League Crypt

Gap Creek by Robert Morgan this was also a book on my nook.  It was a longer then the first but good also.  The description that came up with the book was that it is a story about a marriage.  And it was.

Gap Creek

Before I Go to Sleep by S.J. Watson.  I really liked this book I have recommended to a couple of people since.  The main character has no short term memory and starts keeping a journal so that she can read it everyday and find out what is going on in her life.  She wants to trust her husband but finds Don't trust you husband written in the front of her book and doesn't know what to think.  I couldn't put this one down and it kind of makes you think.

Before I Go to Sleep

Texas Gothic by Rosemary Clement-Moore.  This was a young adults book about a girl who comes from a family of magic and is trying to pretend that it doesn't exist.  I really enjoyed this book also.

Texas Gothic

One more thing most of the books that I post will be books I at least enjoyed enough to read.  If I am not into them by about the second or third chapter I don't usually finish them.  I know that I could be missing out on some good books here and there but there are just to many books out there and not enough time to waste on the ones I don't really care for.  Well that's how I feel anyway.  Happy reading.

These Things Hidden - Heather Gudenkauf

These Things Hidden
Allison Glenn is a small towns golden girl in high school until she commits an unspeakable crime and is sent away to prison.  Her parents try to deny her existence and her younger sister Brynn also wants nothing to do with her.

Five years later and Allison has been released to a halfway house and would like to try and rebuild her relationships with her family.  Her biggest concern is her sister who never seems to have gotten over what happened.  What secrets will come out during the healing process?

I am not sure what I thought this book was about it didn't turn out to be what I thought.  I really enjoyed it though I couldn't put it down.

In the Woods - Tana French

In the Woods
In the summer of 1984 three children didn't come home from playing in the woods when called by their mothers.  After a search the police find only one of them clinging to a tree with blood filled shoes.  The mystery is never solved.

Twenty years later the boy who came home is now a murder detective in Dublin and gets sent to investigate a missing girl who lives near the same woods.  Not sure if the two could be related or even if he can hold off his own demons long enough to solve the crime Ryan heads out with his partner to try and uncover the truth.

This was a great book.  I will definately be reading more by this author.

Gravity Buster - Frank Asch

Gravity Buster: Journal #2 of a Cardboard Genius
This is journal number 2 in the cardboard genius series.  And Alex did not dissapoint.  He has rebuilt his cardboard spaceship that was destroyed during a pillow fight with his evil little brother.  Now he is taking a swing at gravity.

Jacob and I loved this book very imaginative and a lot of fun to read.
